Recorder & Historical Flutes

“Wer sich von klangschönem und fantasievollem Blockflötenspiel verzaubern lassen will, sollte ihn sich anhören!”

MICHAEL SCHNEIDER,
recorder player

Sebastian Schmidt, recorder and traverso player, performs as a soloist as well as in a variety of chamber music and orchestral ensembles. His particular artistic interests lie in the historically informed performance practice of early music and in contemporary music.

He has collaborated with renowned artists such as Dorothee Oberlinger and Maurice Steger and has performed with ensembles including the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal de Versailles, Utopia, and the Capricornus Consort Basel. Concert tours with the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal de Versailles have also taken him to Asia, including a tour of China. He regularly performs in Baroque opera productions, among others at the Oper Frankfurt and at theatres in Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Heidelberg, and Mannheim. His festival appearances include the Salzburger Festspiele and the Magdeburger Telemann-Festtage. During his collaborations with orchestras, several CD productions were made, some of which were broadcast by Deutschlandfunk Kultur, France 2, and Rai Radio 3.

As a prizewinner of international competitions — including the 13th International Telemann Competition — he received scholarships such as the Deutschlandstipendium and was admitted to the “Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken Stiftung” in 2020. After studying recorder and traverso in Freiburg and Frankfurt, he completed his Konzertexamen with Jan Van Hoecke in 2024.

Alongside his concert career, he teaches recorder and chamber music (historical woodwind instruments) as a lecturer at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz. In 2019, he also held a teaching position at the Dr. Hoch’s Konservatorium in Frankfurt.
